 Lasik

Some people are blessed with clear vision, some undergo LASIK to achieve it. If you wish to have good vision without the help of spectacle and contact lenses, LASIK is the procedure for you.

1. What is Lasik ?

It is a procedure to remove spectacle numbers in which a flap of the cornea is created with the help of a microkeratome. This is followed by delivery of laser beam of an appropriate power. The flap is then repositioned. This simple procedure is carried out after instillation of anesthetic drops.

2. How old is the treatment ?

The first Lasik procedure was done twenty years back. Since then it is the most frequently used procedure for correction of refractive errors. Over a million people have already taken benefit of it, till date.

3. Who can undergo Lasik ?

  • Any person 18yrs. above.

  • Having stable refractive errors.

  • Final confirmation can be endorsed by your doctor after complete eye check up.

4. What numbers can be corrected by Lasik ?

Myopia (minus numbers), hyperopia (plus numbers) and Astigmatism (cylinder number) can be corrected by Lasik

5. Why should I undergo Lasik ?

The commonest reasons are intolerance to contact lenses & inconvenience with spects like fogging and distortion. You may be feeling visually and socially restricted by spectacles or contact lenses. Career and life style are compromised due to spects, some times.

6. Is Lasik better than contact lenses ?

Contact lenses require daily care and maintenance and need to be changed from time to time. Poor contact lens hygiene can cause vision threatening complications. Lasik is only one time procedure.

7.What are the newer advances in Lasik?

Advanced machine : The newer Wave Light 400 Hz. Allegretto Wave Eye-Q laser machine from Germany.
Advanced treatment : Wave front treatment with A-CAT, T-CAT, F-CAT software.
Advanced microkeratome : Can perform Lepto Lasik as well as Standard Lasik.

8. What is special about the Allegretto ?

  • It is the world?s fastest 400Hz. Laser, where as the other machines are 100 ? 200Hz speed only.

  • It takes only 2 seconds to correct 1 diopter. The shorter time leads to less stromalbed exposure relared to other complications.

  • It has an ultra small spot size with a Gaussian beam profile, enabling  precise treatment & better post op. corneal profile with faster recovery.

  • It has a Perfect Pulse technology to safely and accurately control every single laser pulse from start to finish.

  • It has a more faster and very well synchronized Eyetracker to ensure accurate and well centred treatments, taking care of all minute saccadic movements during the treatment.

  • The wave light saves up to 40% of valuable corneal tissue for every diopter when compared with some other lasers.

9. What is Wave front treatment ?

A machine called an aberrometer picks up the minor faults and discrepancies in the optical system of the eye. This data is transferred to the computerized laser machine. The laser delivery is designed in such a way that these minor faults are eliminated along with the refractive errors. This results in a superior aberration free optical system giving experience super vision.

The Allegretto Wave Eye Q has A-CAT, T-CAT and F-CAT software to perform Customized Wavefront treatment.

10. What is lepto lasik ? [ or - Tissue Saving surgery ]

During lasik, a flap of the cornea is made with a machine called a microkeratome. The standard microkeratome creates a thckflap of 130 microns.

A thinner flap gives better results. The procedure of creating a thin 90 microns flap of the cornea with a special microkerarome head is called Lepto Lasik.

Lepto Lasik enables us to treat higher refractive errors. It also gives better quality of vision and a more stable cornea.

11. Are there any contraindications of Lasik ?

Yes, patients on certain medications, patients with arthritis, previous Herpes Simplex infection should avoid lasik. Female patients on contraceptive pills, or pregnant and nursing women should postpone lasik until their hormonal status becomes normal.

12. How will I know what procedure I need to have?

Your doctors will guide you in making this choice. The result of all the tests like refraction, topography, pachymetry, aberrometry will enable your doctor to suggest the best options.

13. Can there be re-treatments ?

Yes, if necessary. Lasik is a very predictable procedure. Under or over corrections which necessitatere-treatments are extremely rare. If require re-treatment can be performed, 3 to 6 months after the initial treatment.

 14. Will my total number be removed after surgery ?

Thinner corneas may not permit complete removal of refractive error. In this case your residual number may need to be corrected with specs. This will be made clear to you before you undergo Lasik. You will not require specs for routine activities and driving if your corneal thickness is adequate.

15. Will my number come back after a few years ?

No. Lasik is performed only after your number has stopped increasing.

16.What will happen to my eyes 20-25 years from now?

Your distance vision will remain good without spects, but you may need glasses for reading after the age 40 years.

17.Will I face any problem when I undergo cataract surgery in the future?

No. New formulae have been developed to calculate IOL power for patients who have undergone Lasik. It is extremely important to preserve your pre-Lasik reports for this.

 Before Lasik

Your pre procedure care begins on the day the ,date for your lasik Treatment is finalized. Always follow all

the instructions diligently and Clarify any remaining doubts with your doctor. You should be accompanied by an adult to escort you home after the pre procedure check up.

What care should I take before lasik ?

  •  Don't wear your contact lenses even for a minute at least 1-2 weeks before the procedure

  • Do not wear your eye make up , perfumes , lotion ,hair oil or jewellery on the day of the treatment .

  • Inform your doctor if there is unusual discharge or redness of eye on waking up.

  • Take a hair bath on the day of procedure as washing hair is not permitted for few days after the procedure.

 During Lasik

Before you enter the laser room a liquid will be applied to cleanse your skin . You will be made to lie down comfortably on a reclining chair. Drops will be applied to hold your eye. Your eye will be washed with saline . A ring will be applied to hold your eye while your procedure is going on.

A small motorized microkeratome will create a flap. The ring and microkeratome will be removed and you will be asked to focus on a specific

Will the procedure be painful ?

No. you may feel a little discomfort during certain steps of the procedure. Numbering eye drops will be put in you eyes before the procedure. so you will not feel any pain.

Will both my eyes be treated at the same time?

Yes, Lasik is safe and effective. It is best to treat both eyes at the same sitting. But if you want to have only one eye treated at a time, you can inform your doctor.

What if I move my eye during the laser treatment?

The laser machine has a very fast eye tracker which locks on to the eyes and focuses the laser beam exactly where needed. In addition, our laser machine has the shortest laser delivery time. Hence eye movement during surgery will not affect the result.

 After Lasik

What will happen after the procedure?

Once your Procedure is over you will be taken to another room to rest. Blink gently once a minute. Keep your eyes closed in between. You will feel a slight burning and pricking sensation and may have some watering. After some time your doctor will examine you and let you go home giving post-op instructions.

What Precautions should I take after Lasik ?

  • Don?t touch, wipe or rub your eyes for one week.

  • Put drops and take medicines as instructed.

  • Wear dark glasses during the day and a protective shield at bed time.

  •  Don?t share your drops with anybody or use somebody else?s drops.

  • Take adequate rest on the day of procedure.

  • Do not apply male up without your doctor?s permission

Your vision will be blurry for the first few hours.

  • Your Vision Will be blurry for the first few hours. The burning and pricking sensation will decrease in a few hours.
  • On healing takes place. Your vision may fluctuate a little.
  • Your eyes may be a little sensitive to light.

It depends on what work you do. Office/Computer work can be resumed in a few days. Strenuous work and outdoor work can be resumed in 1 week. It is important to put drops and take medicines on time while at work.
